    In this short note, we draw attention to a relation between two Horn polytopes which is proved in [Chenciner-Jim\'enez P\'erez] as the result on the one side of a deep combinatorial result in [Fomin,Fulton, Li,Poon], on the other side of a simple computation involving complex structures. This suggested an inequality between Littlewood-Richardson coefficients which we prove using the symmetric characterization of these coefficients given in [Carr\'e,Leclerc].Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Increasing evidence suggests that the small EF-hand calcium-binding protein S100B plays an important role in Alzheimer's disease. Among other evidences are the increased levels of both S100B and its receptor, the Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts (RAGEs) in the AD diseased brain. The regulation of RAGE signaling by S100B is complex and probably involves other ligands including the amyloid beta peptide (Aβ), the Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs), or transtheyretin. In this paper we discuss the current literature regarding the role of S100B/RAGE activation in Alzheimer's disease

    Numerical Evaluation of the Effective Elastic Properties of 2D Overlapping Random Fibre Composites

    We present a numerical investigation of the elastic coefficients of random fibre composites with high contrast of properties. Here we consider a numerical study based on the generation of representative volume elements (RVEs) with overlapping random fibre network. Such a concept requires an important Monte-Carlo draw of patterns as well as an accurate determination of RVE size. In this paper, this latter is done by estimating the evolution of the standard deviation according to the number of realizations for given values of RVE size. We consider the use of an appropriate model for an automatic, reliable and fast generation of RVEs : the model with an n-order approximate geometry that allows the construction of complex overlapping fibre network. It is well-established that the morphology of the microstructure greatly affects the mechanical response of such kind material. Some morphological features, namely orientation, aspect ratio and dispersion are investigated by considering them as random variables in the design of RVEs. The results are subsequently linked to the percolation phenomenon that occurs when fibres overlap and form some pathways inside the soft phase. This phenomenon influences effective properties of heterogeneous media, particularly in the case of a high contrast of properties

    An Algebra of Pieces of Space -- Hermann Grassmann to Gian Carlo Rota

    We sketch the outlines of Gian Carlo Rota's interaction with the ideas that Hermann Grassmann developed in his Ausdehnungslehre of 1844 and 1862, as adapted and explained by Giuseppe Peano in 1888. This leads us past what Rota variously called 'Grassmann-Cayley algebra', or 'Peano spaces', to the Whitney algebra of a matroid, and finally to a resolution of the question "What, really, was Grassmann's regressive product?". This final question is the subject of ongoing joint work with Andrea Brini, Francesco Regonati, and William Schmitt. The present paper was presented at the conference "The Digital Footprint of Gian-Carlo Rota: Marbles, Boxes and Philosophy" in Milano on 17 Feb 2009. It will appear in proceedings of that conference, to be published by Springer Verlag.Comment: 28 page

    International audienceComment aider les institutions et acteurs locaux à investir davantage les processus d'affectation des terres pour aménager leur territoire ? La décentralisation de l'aménagement du territoire engagée à la Réunion et au Sénégal est inachevée. Malgré l'arsenal législatif, les populations locales semblent peu impliquées dans les décisions les concernant en raison notamment de la difficulté à appréhender la complexité des systèmes d'interactions entre dynamiques sociales et environnementales. Le projet Domino vise à accompagner les processus de décision en proposant aux acteurs de construire et d'explorer des scenarii prospectifs d'affectation des terres. Cette expérience de modélisation participative repose sur une dynamique partenariale complexe sur chaque terrain, source de difficultés. Conscients des dérives potentielles, nous discutons la nécessité de construire une démarche qualité de notre recherche-action.     The Optical Design of CHARIS: An Exoplanet IFS for the Subaru Telescope

    High-contrast imaging techniques now make possible both imaging and spectroscopy of planets around nearby stars. We present the optical design for the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (CHARIS), a lenslet-based, cryogenic integral field spectrograph (IFS) for imaging exoplanets on the Subaru telescope. The IFS will provide spectral information for 138x138 spatial elements over a 2.07 arcsec x 2.07 arcsec field of view (FOV). CHARIS will operate in the near infrared (lambda = 1.15 - 2.5 microns) and will feature two spectral resolution modes of R = 18 (low-res mode) and R = 73 (high-res mode). Taking advantage of the Subaru telescope adaptive optics systems and coronagraphs (AO188 and SCExAO), CHARIS will provide sufficient contrast to obtain spectra of young self-luminous Jupiter-mass exoplanets. CHARIS will undergo CDR in October 2013 and is projected to have first light by the end of 2015. We report here on the current optical design of CHARIS and its unique innovations.Comment: 15 page

The benzene ring is tilted with respect to the attached cyclo­penta­diene ring by 17.0 (1)° and by 24.2 (1)° with respect to the dioxaborolane ring. The mol­ecules assemble in the crystal via C—H⋯π inter­actions between the cyclo­penta­dienyl H atoms and the benzene and cyclo­penta­dienyl rings of neighbouring mol­ecules
